PostgreSQL Health Check

Start here

Not sure where to begin? A fixed-scope review of your single node or cluster, delivered as a written report with prioritised findings and specific next steps — not a generic scorecard.

Most engagements start here. It gives you a clear, evidence-based picture of where your database actually stands before committing to anything longer-term, and it's scoped tightly enough to turn around fast.

single nodecluster reviewwritten reportfixed scope
What's covered
  • Configuration audit — memory, parallelism, checkpoint, WAL
  • Vacuum health and table bloat analysis
  • Index usage and missing index identification
  • Top queries by total time via pg_stat_statements
  • Replication lag and standby status, if applicable
  • Connection handling and pool configuration review
02

Performance Tuning

Hands-on, manual diagnosis: cost parameters, JIT, parallelism, vacuum tuning — the full picture, not a single knob turned in isolation. We read EXPLAIN ANALYZE output ourselves and tell you what's actually wrong, without leaning on any automated advisor to do the thinking for us.

This is ongoing or project-based work, scoped to your actual workload — a write-heavy OLTP system and an analytics warehouse get tuned very differently, and we treat them that way. If you already have an automated tuning tool in place, that's covered separately below.

EXPLAIN ANALYZEpg_stat_statementsmanual diagnosisautovacuum
What's covered
  • Query plan analysis on your slowest, highest-volume queries
  • Cost-parameter and connection pooling calibration
  • Autovacuum and bloat control tuned to your write pattern
  • Hand-built indexes for cases too specific for a generic advisor

DBA as a Service

Ongoing database operations without the overhead of a full-time hire. Proactive monitoring, incident response, version upgrades, backup validation, and a direct line to engineers who know what they're looking at.

We manage what you already run — public cloud, private cloud, or on-prem — we're not selling you new infrastructure or a hosting platform. Built for teams that need real DBA coverage but don't have the volume of work to justify a dedicated headcount, or want senior-level oversight alongside an existing team. Engineers can work fully remote or embed at your premises, whichever fits how your team operates.

What's covered
  • Proactive monitoring and alerting on the metrics that matter
  • Backup validation — not just backups existing, but restorable
  • Planned, tested major version upgrades
  • Incident response with a real engineer, not a ticket queue
  • Remote by default, on-site at your premises when it's the better fit

Database Migrations

Oracle to PostgreSQL, MySQL to PostgreSQL, cloud to on-prem, or on-prem to cloud. We handle schema conversion, data validation, and the edge cases automated tools miss — because we've seen what breaks in production.

Migrations fail quietly, in the details a generic conversion tool doesn't know to check: sequence semantics, isolation-level differences, procedural code that doesn't translate cleanly. That's where we spend our time — and for cutovers where timing and access matter, we can run the migration on-site at your premises rather than purely remote.

What's covered
  • Schema and stored-procedure conversion
  • Data validation against the source system, not just row counts
  • Cutover planning, including zero-downtime approaches where feasible
  • On-site cutover support available for regulated or air-gapped environments
05

Architecture & HA Design

High availability, replication topologies, Patroni, CloudNativePG, connection pooling, and distributed setups. We help you design for the failure modes you haven't encountered yet — not just the ones you have.

This spans greenfield architecture for a new system and hardening an existing one that's outgrown its original design assumptions.

What's covered
  • Replication topology design and failover testing
  • Connection pooling strategy at scale
  • Kubernetes-native Postgres via CloudNativePG

Automated Tuning & Index Recommendations

Automated tuning and index-recommendation tools have gotten genuinely good — but knowing which one fits your workload, and whether to trust what it's telling you, still takes real PostgreSQL judgement. We help you select, configure, and validate the right tooling for your environment.

This isn't a hands-off "turn on autopilot" service. We review what an automated tool proposes against your actual workload before anything is applied, and we're vendor-neutral — the right answer is sometimes a specific commercial tool, sometimes an open-source approach, sometimes just a manually-applied index once we know what to look for.

What's covered
  • Evaluating automated tuning and index-recommendation tools against your workload
  • Safe rollout — reviewing proposed changes before they reach production
  • Ongoing oversight so recommendations stay appropriate as your workload evolves

24/7 Emergency Support

Production incidents don't keep office hours. When your database is down or degraded, you need an engineer who can diagnose and act — not a ticketing queue. We offer direct emergency access for critical situations, remote by default with on-site response available for severe incidents.

This is offered alongside our other services for existing clients, and as a standalone retainer for teams that just need a real escalation path when things go wrong.

What's covered
  • Direct on-call access to a senior engineer
  • Live incident diagnosis and remediation
  • Post-incident write-up with root cause

Not sure which one fits?

Most engagements start with a conversation, not a commitment. Tell us what you're dealing with and we'll point you at the right starting place — often the health check, sometimes not.
